Finca Dona Elsa SL28

For almost 20 years, we’ve been traveling around the equator, along what’s known as the coffee belt, always with the goal of finding the very best coffees.

Personal contact with the farmers has always been important to us, and over the years we’ve had the privilege of learning about their different methods and approaches. Our time spent on the farms has been invaluable, because we’ve seen firsthand that behind every harvest, behind every single bean, there’s a deep desire to achieve the best possible result.

On our journeys, we’ve learned a lot — and over time, a secret dream began to take root in us, like a tiny seed. This seed grew slowly at first, tender and small, but as the years went by, it became stronger and stronger until it was impossible to ignore: we dreamed of having our very own farm. A place where we could grow our own coffee, gain new experiences, and try out everything ourselves right there on-site.

Costa Rica, one of our favorite places, turned out to be where this dream would come true! The country is known for its outstanding coffee quality, breathtaking nature, and, most importantly for us, incredibly warm-hearted people. In the highlands of Tarrazú, we discovered a steep, fallow slope at about 1,950 meters above sea level — the perfect spot for our farm.

But first, there was a lot of work ahead of us. Together with friendly neighbors, we built a small path leading from the public road to our farm. Because we love trees, we kept the existing ones along with a small patch of forest, and we even planted additional fruit trees. At the same time, we began our search for exceptional Arabica varieties. In the end, four main varieties and a whole range of experimental ones made it into our variety garden.

In the south of the country, the carefully selected coffee seeds were nurtured in a nursery until they grew into small seedlings. A few months later, we planted each one by hand, carefully and lovingly, on our farm. After planting, we needed plenty of patience — because good things take time.

Three years of devoted care followed. Finally, the first deep red coffee cherries ripened, leading to our very first tiny harvest. Altogether, our farm produced just 40 kilograms of roasted coffee that year. But to us, it was pure joy — we were endlessly proud of every single gram. Each cup of that coffee was a celebration.

As a family, we accomplished this dream together! In memory of our beloved Grandma Elsa and to honor our family bonds, we named our farm Finca Doña Elsa.

This year, the harvest from our beloved corner of Costa Rica was already a bit bigger. The beans were picked, sent to Munich, and roasted in our roastery. We are proud of every single bean because, in this case, we can guarantee — from planting the seeds to harvesting and roasting — that every step was done with great care and love.

Today, we’re overjoyed to finally share our coffee, Doña Elsa, with our family, friends, and customers. Because enjoying it together makes it even more special!
